Global Health Medical Device Development

Past Project: Birth related maternal mortalities results in 300,000 lives each year. At low resource setting, Post-Partum Hemorrhaging (PPH) is accountable for quarter of maternal mortalities. PPH mortalities could largely be prevented in the presence of skilled healthcare providers in healthcare facilities which is often not available in the smaller communities in the developing areas. Our multidisciplinary team consisting of engineers and medical doctors, has set out to develop a lightweight low-cost portable auto-transfusion device. The goal of the device is to stabilize the mother before she is transferred to a medical facility where she could receive professional help. The device, Save-My-Mum: Maternal Autotransfuser, is designed to collect the PPH blood inside a collection drape, filter the contaminates, and auto-transfuse the filtered blood back to the patient.
